Men's Oxford Shirt

The Classic Oxford Shirt

The cloth used for men's oxford shirts goes back to 19th century Great Britain. The fabric has a distinctive pattern that looks somewhat like a basket weave. Today many dress shirts are made out of the oxford cloth that was developed long ago.

A Scottish fabric mill during the 19th century started using cotton to make the oxford cloth. It is one of many different shirt fabrics named after a famous university.

The Oxford fabric has some unique features. Two fine yarns are taken and woven against a yarn that is heavier. In many cases the heavier yarn used is a different color than the finer yarns. It is the contrast in color that provides the unique pattern of oxford cloth.

Men’s oxford shirts were actually worn by polo players for some time. It wasn't until the polo shirt was introduced by Rene Lacoste in the 1930s that polo players stopped wearing shirts made from this oxford fabric.

Now you know some history of men's oxford shirts.

The Natural BasiX Oxford Shirt is available in Solid or Bengal Stripe. This is “The Big Shirt”, over sized and comfortable for layering. Made of 100% cotton with a soft washed finish, this is The Classic Oxford Shirt.

Classic Polo Shirts A Pop Culture

The Polo Shirt: One of the Most Important Shirts

The polo shirt is a knitted pullover-style sport shirt featuring a rolled collar that bottoms at the neck.

As dressing became less formal for men, the polo shirt migrated into popular culture as semi-casual wear. Ralph Lauren’s brand Polo was helpful in setting the style.  His brand and Lacoste’s have been duplicated by numerous designers, leading to a wide range of polo shirts available.

The modern polo shirt is still considered popular. Many men prefer them to T-shirts since the collar makes them more stylish.
